Rainforests vs Transportation Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 May 2007

I used to be pretty preachy about air travel being such a big contributor to global warming. BUT I have to eat my words. Turns out there's something MUCH MUCH worse -- deforestation of tropical rainforests.

In the next 24 hours, deforestation will release as much CO2 into the atmosphere as 8 million people flying from London to New York. Stopping the loggers is the fastest and cheapest solution to climate change. So why are global leaders turning a blind eye to this crisis?

I also have to eat my words because I know that I'm going to have to fly somewhere in the near future. (Details on the location coming later... ;)

FORTUNATELY there's a wonderful organization called Climate Care who are doing amazing work with carbon offsetting. They calculate the amount of carbon you release in traveling by various means, then calculate the amount so that you can donate to projects that have remove an equivalent amount of carbon from the atmosphere.

But their projects go so much farther than that.

For instance, one involves foot pumps. They help farmers in India replace their need for diesel-fume spewing pumps with a handy alternative -- a pump that can be used (and looks) just like a stairmaster. The bonus of this project is that the pumps are manufactured locally so it becomes a social and economic development project as well. Seems that all of their efforts work similarly. Check 'em out.
