The 80/20 Rule Print E-mail
Thursday, 18 May 2006

Somewhere along the line I heard this notion that 80% of the work on a project takes place in the last 20% of the time alloted. I've certainly noticed that in my web design work and on activist projects. Its like there is a long, slow build where nothing much seems to be happening, then there's an explosion of activity.

In a way, that's also echoed in the course of human history.

In the early 20th century, Sir Lawrence Bragg, a British physicist, gave a presentation at Carnegie Hall in which he displayed a graphic of the development of human technology. There was a nearly horizontal line until 1844, then it nearly shoots straight up.

Its as if humanity was plodding along for thousands of years and then suddenly reached a point of culmination, resulting in a giant burst of creativity, inspiration and hard work.

The one thing seemingly missing from this scenario is consciousness. While there have been great advancements in psychology, we're pretty much still stumbling about with the same basic conception of the universe that we've always had--a fear and scarcity-based perception that we're alone, isolated and need to defend our values to the death.

All manifestations of "separation anxiety" as I like to call it. That's the notion that our sense of being separated from other creatures is real and that we must act accordingly, defending our turf, whether literally or figuratively.

Albert Einstein said "our separation is an illusion, a construct of the mind." Modern physics has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the universe is actually one 'thing'. David Bohm called it holographic... the sum of the whole is contained within the smallest of part.

The notions of space and time that we cling to are mere illusions when it comes to the actual form of the universe and yet our overall consciousness lags behind.

But possibly not for long.

It may be that we experience an explosion of growth similar to the 80/20 rule.

There are certainly a LOT of prophecies from both mainstream religions and ancient indigenous cultures that speak of a point of transition to "unity-based consciousness," a state of being in which we fully and finally come to accept that...

WE

ARE

ONE.
